Breathing Hole

By Jim Pascual Agustin

after Kieslowski’s “White”

A broken heart is a suitcase
with a breathing hole.

You go home seeing no more
than the size of a thumbprint
in a passport you’ve lost.

To speak to her again
would mean learning
a new language,

finding your way
out of a dump, negotiating
with people until you trust

your nose once more.
But first you have to tumble
out of that suitcase.
